Born in 1968, lives and works in Paris, France.

A scientist by training, Lionel Bayol-Thémines is a graduate of ENSP-Arles. He is a resident of the Fondation nationale des artistes and teaches photography at L’ESADHaR in Rouen.

Inspired by the philosopher Vilem Flusser – who questioned the history of images and their creative process – and artists such as Joan Fontcuberta, who worked on the « truth » of photography and its capacity to represent reality, Lionel Bayol-Thémines creates singular images that question the capacity of digital photography to generate other « realities ». The artist also asserts the material dimension of images, creating devices that are veritable photographic sculptures. Lionel Bayol-Thémines is experimenting with landscape representation using Google Earth software, and the impact of artificial intelligence on the representation of our living space. His work is concerned with exploring and documenting these virtual models, and questioning the distribution of images and the programs that generate them.

In 2018, his « Flux Scape » project was selected for the national photographic commission « Flux, a society in motion » by the French Ministry of Culture, CNAP.

In 2019, his « After Nadar » project was selected for the photographic commission by the Mission Photographique du Grand Est

From 2019 to 2021, he was invited by the University of Strasbourg for Supplementary elements residency, which led to the « Low Space Oddity » project initiated with the Centre de Documentation Spatiale de Strasbourg (CDS).

In 2022, he began collaborative work with neural networks (AI) and explored other possibilities linked to experimental photography and its history. To date, several research spaces have been created, including « War.AI », « Ai Generated (another story of experimental photographs with machines) » and « Playing with John Baldessari and machines ».

Scientifique de formation, Lionel Bayol-Thémines est diplômé de l’ENSP-Arles. Il est résident de la Fondation nationale des artistes et enseigne la photographie à L’ESADHaR de Rouen.

L’artiste revendique également la dimension matérielle des images, en élaborant des dispositifs qui sont de véritables sculptures photographiques.
Lionel Bayol-Thémines expérimente la représentation du paysage via le logiciel Google Earth et l’impact de l’intelligence artificielle sur la représentation de notre espace de vie. Les préoccupations de son travail sont d’explorer, de documenter ces modélisations virtuelles, d’interroger la diffusion des images et les programmes qui les génèrent.

En 2018 son projet “Flux Scape“, a été retenu pour la commande photographique nationale « Flux une société en mouvement » Ministère de la Culture, CNAP.

En 2019 son projet “After Nadar“ a été retenu pour la commande photographique de la Mission Photographique du Grand Est.

De 2019 à 2021 il est invité par L’université de Strasbourg pour la résidence Supplementary elements qui est à
l’origine du projet “Low Space Oddity“ initié avec le Centre de Documentation Spatiale de Strasbourg (CDS).

En 2022, il commence un travail collaboratif avec des réseaux neuronaux (AI) et explore d’autres possibles liés à la photographie expérimentale et à son histoire.
